Brothers in songSupport the Morehouse College Glee Club's 50th Anniversary Tour of Africa

Fifty years ago, the "World Famous Morehouse Glee Club" embarked on a pilgrimage to five African nations to reconnect with the rhythms of the motherland. The monumental tour, led by beloved director, "Doc" Dr. Wendell P. Whalum '52, would inspire the innovative sound that has launched the Glee Club into choral history as an international treasure committed to building community and a greater understanding of the African diaspora through music excellence.

In commemoration of that pivotal 1972 tour, the Morehouse Glee Club is returning to Africa from June 26 - July 9, 2022, for a four-city Nigerian tour and cultural exploration of music heritage. Our GOAL is to raise $100,000 (and unlock a special 1:1 matching challenge to bring the total to $200,000). Glee Club Director Dr. David Morrow and assistant music professor Timothy Miller will lead the group of 35 Morehouse choral ambassadors as they sing on a world stage with mass choirs in the cities of Abuja, Lagos, Uyo and Enugu. The Glee Club will also visit universities and secondary schools to explore their historical ties to the nation and meet Nigerian students.

The visit is expected to enrich the Glee Club's distinctive musical stylings and forge new bonds of brotherhood between Morehouse College students and those within the African nation. After faculty and Glee Club students returned from Nigeria in 1972, they expanded their repertoire, bringing African drumming and songs sung in the languages of Igbo and Yoruba back with them. High school and college choirs throughout the country often sing in Yorùbá, showing the long-term impact of this exchange.

You can support the international journey of the Morehouse Glee Club by making a contribution to help with the expenses of the African Tour. Our goal of $200,000 covers all fees associated with the trip; airfare, transportation, lodging, meals, COVID testing, security, visas, travel insurance, performance set-up expenses at each venue, and more.

To commemorate this historic occasion, the College will match EVERY gift made to the Glee Club between now and April 30 - 1:1 up to $100,000.

Morehouse Glee Club: Music Excellence and Public Acclaim for 111 years

Since 1911, the Morehouse Glee Club has represented the intellectual artistic preeminence of Morehouse College as it performed before packed audiences across the nation and world. Alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends fondly remember hearing the Glee Club sing cherished spirituals, classical songs in multiple languages, and renditions of "Dear Old Morehouse." The Glee Club has a long tradition of many notable public appearances, having performed for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter, Super Bowl XXVII, and the 1996 Summer Olympics, in addition to a celebrated annual Spring Tour.

Your gift today will help the Glee Club compose more next level music that will influence American Choral performances across the nation.

Remember, the college will match EVERY gift made to the Glee Club between now and April 30 - 1:1 up to $100,000. Any gifts that exceed our goal will be used to enhance the Glee Club.
