AFRICANA STUDIES & HISTORY – SANKOFA FUND

AFRICANA STUDIES & HISTORY – SANKOFA FUND

Morehouse College assumes the special responsibility of teaching the history and culture of Black people. Given this history-specific mission, the college looks to create the Africana Studies & History – Sankofa Fund to develop and support Men of Morehouse preparing for impactful careers that advance the study of Black life history and culture. The fund will support top-performing Morehouse students majoring in Africana Studies or History.

We seek gifts from multiple donors to establish an endowment that will provide academic scholarships and study abroad opportunities. Any gift amount be greatly appreciated. To make a gift of $10,000 or greater, please contact: Jenneh.Scott@morehouse.edu.

SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIP

Aspiring servant leaders come to Africana Studies and History at Morehouse from across the nation and around the globe. Too often, many of these talented students “stop out” or dis-enroll due to financial limitations. The proposed Africana Studies & History – Sankofa Fund will combat that by providing top-performing students with annual scholarships. Students will become eligible in their sophomore year, and all scholarships will be awarded based on their academic and service records while at Morehouse College.

SUPPORT STUDY ABROAD

African Americans generally make up 4-6% of study abroad population and Black men make up less than half of this underrepresented group. Research has shown that students who study abroad are more likely to earn higher grade point averages, finish college, and attain the most desirable workforce skills. Therefore, we seek to raise funds that support students with study-abroad grants. These funds will be used for students to have academic and co-curricular experiences in Africana sites such as the Caribbean, South America, and Africa.

ABOUT

As holistic majors, Africana Studies and History curricula prepare Men of Morehouse to become critical-thinking global citizens. Our students are committed to the philosophy of servant leadership and are keenly aware of their inner strengths, cultural capital, and sociopolitical challenges. We use an integrative approach to examine questions of social justice and Black life. Our program enhances the agency and efficacy of Men of Morehouse by facilitating rigorous interdisciplinary research, cooperative learning, and service-learning experiences. AS&H faculty and student research efforts seek to amplify the voices and increase the visibility and understanding of people of African descent through documenting, studying, and sharing Africana narratives contextualized by an array of scientific data. Our courses prepare Men of Morehouse to think across different data sets and to integrate different research disciplines into their unique capstone research questions. Our faculty members encourage students to use these classes as labs to address social problems that impact Black communities nationally, locally and globally. Africana Studies and History is housed within the Humanities, Social Sciences, Media and Arts Division (HSSMA) at Morehouse College. HSSMA develops disciplined men committed to lives of leadership and service through the study of liberal arts. We are pursuing innovative strategies to address persistent inequities in employment outcomes for Black men and first-generation college students.
