Last September, Morehouse and Hauser & Wirth partnered to host Making Men of Consequence: The Campaign for Morehouse College, an initiative centered around raising $500 million to grow the institution’s international footprint, modernize its infrastructure, recruit new talent at the top of their fields, and expand its scholarship capabilities for all deserving students.
The event also served as an announcement for monumental expansion of the Martin Luther King Jr Chapel which will include a large-scale 6000 sq ft + exhibition space. The expansion is estimated to cost $50 million.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ‘48 is Morehouse College’s most celebrated alumnus. Until I joined the Steering Committee for the Making Men of Consequence campaign, I was not aware that the College owned The King Collection, letters and other correspondence between King and well-known figures such as Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, as well as from writers such as Langston Hughes, John Steinbeck, and Lillian Smith. Hundreds of handwritten notes, famous and lesser-known speeches, manuscripts, sermons, and other writings of unparalleled historical significance also are featured in the Collection.
The College and I are committed to creating a campus space for the exhibition of contemporary art and the King Collection as we use the world of art to connect Dr. King's legacy with the extremely significant current events we face today.
